As a Fort Allen Park proposal photographer, I know that the best proposals are about so much more than the moment someone gets down on one knee. Colin's surprise proposal to Robyn at Fort Allen Park was the perfect example of that.

Their proposal was emotional, filled with happy tears, and thoughtfully planned from start to finish. Knowing how meaningful this location was to their relationship made documenting it even more special.

Planning the Perfect Fort Allen Park Proposal

When Colin first reached out to me, he knew exactly where he wanted to propose. It had to happen on a park bench along the Eastern Promenade in Fort Allen Park because that was where he and Robyn had fallen in love during a weekend trip to Portland.

Since keeping everything a complete surprise was so important, we intentionally kept communication simple. Instead of sending a lot of written directions, I created a video showing Colin exactly where I would be waiting so he wouldn't have to search for me when they arrived. I also shared my location with him on the day of the proposal so he could feel confident that everything was in place.

One of the biggest things I do for my proposal clients is remove as much stress as possible. The person proposing has enough on their mind. My job is to make sure logistics disappear into the background so they can focus entirely on their partner.

A Proposal Filled with Happy Tears

When the day arrived, I settled onto a nearby park bench with a book and my camera resting beside me, blending into the scenery while I waited for Colin and Robyn to arrive.

As soon as Colin turned toward Robyn and dropped to one knee, I quietly stood up and began photographing the moment from a distance. Robyn was so wrapped up in the emotions of everything happening that she never even noticed me. That allowed me to capture every smile, every tear, and every reaction as naturally as it unfolded.

Once the excitement settled, she finally spotted me and gave me a wave. I introduced myself, and we began wandering through the park for portraits.

One More Surprise Along the Eastern Promenade

Our first stop was the rental property across the street from the proposal location. It was the home where Colin and Robyn had stayed during the trip when they realized they had fallen in love. Being able to photograph them there felt like closing one chapter while beginning another.

As we walked back toward the proposal spot, Robyn suddenly noticed a group of familiar faces waiting for her.

Her entire family was there.

Her mom and siblings. Colin's parents and sister. Everyone had been keeping the surprise a secret for months, and the moment she realized they were all standing there waiting to celebrate with them, she was overwhelmed with emotion.

I hurried ahead so I could photograph Colin and Robyn walking toward their families. Those candid moments, full of hugs, tears, and laughter, are some of my favorite images from the entire day.

After spending time together, we photographed family portraits along the Eastern Promenade before everyone headed off to celebrate over dinner. Colin and Robyn stayed behind for a few more portraits together, giving them a chance to slow down and soak in everything that had just happened.

Why I Love Photographing Surprise Proposals

It was one of those perfect summer afternoons in Portland. The sunshine was warm without being overwhelming, sailboats drifted across Casco Bay, and the ocean created a peaceful backdrop for such a meaningful moment. Robyn especially loved seeing the boats in the harbor, making the setting feel even more personal.

Experiences like this remind me why I love photographing proposals so much.
