A Quiet Beach Wedding With a Storm on the Way

Kendra and Ben's intimate wedding at Colony Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine had a little bit of everything. An approaching nor'easter, two very well-dressed dogs, and a handful of the people who mattered most.
Kendra's family had a long history with Kennebunkport. Her grandparents often vacationed here, so getting married along the same coastline held a deeper meaning. It was a beautiful way to bring a little family history into their wedding day.
They weren't looking for a big production. Just a quiet beach ceremony, time with their families, and some beautiful photographs to remember it all.

Planning a Kennebunkport Elopement Around a Nor'easter

The weather was our biggest challenge. A nor'easter was moving through Maine that weekend, and Kendra was understandably worried about the rain.
With smaller weddings and elopements, I often take on a bigger role in helping couples navigate the planning process. We talked through our options, including photographing everything indoors if necessary or embracing the rain outside.
Ultimately, we moved the ceremony up an hour, and it worked. We stayed dry!
Even better, the approaching storm gave us some incredible light. The dark skies and soft coastal light created exactly the kind of moody atmosphere I love photographing.

Candid Moments, Editorial Portraits, and Two Very Important Dogs

With such a small group, the ceremony felt incredibly personal. Ben had three mothers there celebrating with him, which was especially meaningful. And their two dogs showed up dressed as a bride and groom, naturally.
After the ceremony, we spent about an hour creating portraits along Colony Beach.
Ben was a little camera shy, but sometimes the people who are least comfortable in front of a camera surprise themselves. His portraits took on this beautiful, understated editorial quality without needing much direction.
Kendra looked incredibly elegant, and her piercing blue eyes were especially striking against the darker coastal tones.
We balanced candid wedding photography with editorial portraits, allowing them to enjoy their time together while still creating something artistic.

A Micro Wedding That Felt Like Them

One of my favorite things about photographing Kennebunkport micro weddings and elopements is how much room there is to make the experience personal.
For Kendra and Ben, that meant keeping things peaceful, making their family feel comfortable, and not letting a storm dictate the entire day.
As a Maine elopement photographer and LGBTQ+ affirming wedding photographer, I work with couples who want to feel comfortable being themselves, whether their wedding includes five guests or fifty.

A Wedding That Was Entirely Their Own

There was something about Miranda and Marie's wedding that felt different from the beginning. Not because they were trying to make a statement, but because every part of their day felt so intentionally them.
Held at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, their wedding brought together an industrial downtown setting, dark and artistic details, and a beautiful blend of cultures and spiritual traditions. Tarot-inspired decor, rich tones, and carefully curated details created an atmosphere that was elegant without feeling formal or conventional.
Nothing felt like it was there simply because it was supposed to be.

A Queer Wedding Focused on Connection, Not Performance

One of the things Miranda and Marie made clear was that they wanted candid wedding photography. They weren't interested in turning their wedding into an elaborate photoshoot. They wanted to be present, enjoy their people, and trust that the moments worth remembering would be documented.
And that's exactly how I approached their day.
I spent most of my time observing, anticipating moments, and letting things unfold. When I did offer direction, I checked in to make sure they were comfortable. The goal was never to interrupt what was happening just to create a photograph.
For couples planning an LGBTQ+ wedding, especially one that doesn't follow every traditional expectation, I think that freedom matters. Your wedding photography should reflect the experience you're creating, not force you into someone else's version of what a wedding should look like.

Meaningful Vows and Quiet Joy

Miranda and Marie's ceremony was deeply personal. Their families were loving and wonderfully low-key, but there were plenty of tears when the vows began.
One story has stayed with me. During their first year together, they would stay awake late into the night because neither wanted to give up another moment together, even to sleep.
It was such a simple, beautiful glimpse into their relationship.
That same quiet joy carried throughout the wedding. Nothing needed to be exaggerated to be meaningful.

Dark, Moody Wedding Photography That Preserves the Atmosphere

The lighting at Machines With Magnets presented some challenges, but I didn't want to erase the atmosphere by making everything artificially bright.
Instead, I embraced the shadows, the warmth, and the artistic mood Miranda and Marie had created.
As a queer wedding photographer based in Maine and available for destination weddings throughout New England, I love working with couples who value individuality and trust me to document their day as it actually feels.
Miranda and Marie's wedding was a reminder that you don't have to perform for the camera to have beautiful wedding photographs.

Planning Your Own LGBTQ+ Wedding?

Looking for an LGBTQ+ affirming wedding photographer who understands that your celebration doesn't need to follow a script?
Whether you're planning an intimate queer wedding, a multicultural celebration, or something entirely unconventional, I'd love to hear what you're dreaming up.

As a Wells, Maine proposal photographer who specializes in LGBTQ+ proposals, I spend a lot of time helping couples find locations that feel personal, beautiful, and true to who they are. Sydney and Eliza's proposal at Wells Reserve at Laudholm was all of those things. Between the sweeping marsh views, the quiet boardwalk, and an unexpected rainstorm that had us laughing all the way back to the parking lot, this was one of those proposals I'll be smiling about for years.

Planning the Perfect Proposal

One of my favorite parts of photographing a proposal actually happens long before the proposal itself.
When Eliza first reached out, they shared a few details that helped me narrow down the perfect location. They wanted the proposal to feel private, which can actually be surprisingly difficult unless you're on private property or at a rented venue. They also wanted the location to have personal meaning. Eliza's family has a cottage in Wells, Maine, and they've spent countless summers visiting Wells Reserve at Laudholm, making it the perfect place to begin this next chapter together.
Just as importantly, Eliza wanted the proposal stop to make sense with the rest of their day so Sydney wouldn't suspect anything.

I spent a couple of hours scouting the reserve before settling on the perfect spot. I even recorded a video for Eliza showing exactly where to stand and what to expect when they arrived. On the day of the proposal, I got there about an hour early to make sure everything still looked good. The last time I'd visited, part of the boardwalk had been closed because of a hornets' nest underneath it, so I wanted to double-check that our original plan was still possible and decide exactly where I wanted to photograph the moment.
That's one of the things I love most about proposal planning. My couples get to focus on the excitement while I worry about all the logistics.

The Proposal

Like many surprise proposals, things didn't go exactly according to plan... and that's completely okay.
Sydney and Eliza were running a little behind, which honestly is incredibly common. It's not easy getting someone to arrive at an exact place and exact time without raising suspicion. While I waited, I kept an eye on their shared location so I knew when they were getting close.
I tucked myself behind a few trees and some lush ferns near the boardwalk.
Then, just as they arrived... Eliza walked right past me.
Definitely not part of the plan.
Without missing a beat, I pretended to photograph a few geese in the marsh while casually stepping off the trail. When I realized they had turned back toward the boardwalk, I quietly slipped back into position and waited.
A few moments later, Eliza knelt down.
Nailed it.

Sydney's reaction was full of joy, surprise, and excitement. I always give my couples a little space after the proposal so they can soak it all in before I introduce myself. Those first few minutes belong entirely to them, and they're often some of the most meaningful moments of the entire day.
One detail Eliza shared with me that I absolutely loved was that, while many queer couples choose to propose to each other, they wanted Sydney to have a proposal that was completely her own. I thought that was such a thoughtful way to celebrate both their relationship and Sydney's experience in that once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Portraits Along the Trails and Beach

After celebrating together on the boardwalk, we made the fifteen-minute walk down to the beach.
One of the reasons I love photographing at Wells Reserve at Laudholm is that the walk itself becomes part of the experience. The trails are lined with lush greenery, beautiful granite benches, and little pockets of light that make perfect places to stop for photos. We took our time, chatting, laughing, and stopping whenever the scenery caught our eye.

When we finally reached the beach, it looked like something out of a dream.
The tide was all the way out, revealing what felt like miles of open sand stretching toward the horizon. Even though it isn't a private beach, it feels incredibly peaceful because of how expansive it is.
Sydney and Eliza made my job so easy. They were completely wrapped up in each other, smiling constantly and soaking in every second together. I simply encouraged them to walk, run, and enjoy the space around them. The best photographs happen when my couples stop thinking about the camera and simply enjoy being together.

Dancing in the Rain

Just as we were wrapping up our session, we felt a couple of raindrops.
Then a few more.
Then... absolutely pouring rain.
There wasn't an umbrella in sight, and there wasn't any real shelter on the trail back to the parking lot. We had one choice: embrace it.
By the time we made it halfway back, we were completely soaked from head to toe.
Instead of letting it ruin the afternoon, Sydney and Eliza laughed the entire way. We even stopped beneath a tree so I could photograph them dancing together in the rain because honestly... how could we not?
Of course I would have preferred sunshine, but those unexpected moments often become the stories people tell for years afterward. Watching the two of them laugh through the downpour felt like the perfect reflection of who they are together: adventurous, joyful, and completely focused on each other no matter what the day brings.

Why Working with a Queer Proposal Photographer Matters

One of the reasons Sydney and Eliza chose to work with me was because they wanted someone who would immediately understand their relationship and help them feel completely comfortable throughout such a personal moment.
As a queer woman myself, I know how meaningful that feeling can be.
Photographing LGBTQ+ proposals is about so much more than taking beautiful photographs. I share many of the same life experiences as my couples, and I don't take that connection for granted. My goal is always to create a space where my couples feel celebrated, understood, and completely free to be themselves.
From spending hours scouting locations to creating planning videos, adjusting plans on the fly, and helping keep every detail a surprise, I want my couples to focus on one thing: the person standing in front of them. I'll take care of everything else.

A Frye Island Wedding on Sebago Lake

As a Frye Island wedding photographer who specializes in LGBTQ+ weddings, I have the privilege of documenting so many beautiful love stories, but every once in a while, a wedding comes along where the location is part of the love story itself. Eva and Dani's wedding was exactly that. They returned to the island where they first met, surrounded by the people who love them most, to promise each other forever. It was sentimental, emotional, and one of those days I'll remember for a very long time.

Getting Ready at a Lakefront Home

Eva and Dani chose to get ready together at a quiet lakefront home on the opposite side of Frye Island from where their ceremony would take place. I always love when couples decide to spend the morning together. It slows the pace of the day and allows them to experience every part of it side by side.
One of my favorite moments happened before we ever left the house. Dani shared a sweet first look with her dad on the dock before turning around for another first look with Eva. Watching those moments unfold against the calm water was the perfect way to begin their wedding day.
As we planned their timeline together, we decided the lake house would be the ideal place for these first looks. It gave them a quiet space to soak in the excitement before joining their family for the ceremony.

An Emotional Ceremony at Beach 5

After the first looks, we made our way across the island to Beach 5, where family and friends were waiting along the shoreline.
The ceremony overlooked Sebago Lake and felt wonderfully intimate. There was an excitement in the air, but it was the kind that comes from knowing you're exactly where you're meant to be.
During the vows, Dani shared something that completely stayed with me. She said that the very first time she saw Eva, while Eva was catering a wedding on Frye Island, she became "instantly obsessively curious" about her.
I smiled hearing those words because they felt so uniquely Dani.
The two became best friends before finally telling each other how they felt. Even while Eva was living in Washington, D.C., and Dani was studying in Philadelphia, they built a relationship that eventually brought them back to the very island where it all began. Standing there listening to those vows, it was impossible not to appreciate how full circle their wedding day had become.

Lakeside Portraits and a Celebration with Family

After the ceremony, we spent a little time on the beach creating portraits before heading to the reception.
Their celebration took place beneath a beautiful tent on the ball field, where family and friends were already gathered for cocktail hour. The wedding design felt timeless while embracing the relaxed spirit of a Maine summer. Wildflowers, soft pastel colors, and the lakeside setting created a light and airy atmosphere that fit Eva and Dani perfectly.
Before everyone settled in for dinner, we created a few more portraits around the reception space. Then they were announced into the tent for their first dance together before enjoying dinner surrounded by the people who had supported them throughout their journey.
One of the most touching parts of the evening came from their family. Dani's sister Megan sang while her father accompanied her on guitar, creating a moment that felt incredibly personal. Later, Dani's brother became overwhelmed with emotion, breaking down in tears before embracing both Dani and Eva. Moments like those are impossible to plan for, and they're often the ones people remember most.

Creating Space to Be Present

One of the reasons Eva and Dani reached out to me was because they were intentionally searching for queer-inclusive wedding vendors.
Eva and Dani also intentionally built a vendor team that reflected their values. Their bartender and DJ were both queer women, creating a wedding day where they could truly relax knowing they were surrounded by people who understood and celebrated them. I loved seeing that level of intention because it allowed everyone to focus on what mattered most: celebrating their marriage.
Photographing queer weddings means so much more to me than simply documenting the day. I share many of the same life experiences as my couples, and I don't take that connection for granted. It allows me to approach these moments with an understanding that feels deeply personal. My goal is always to create a space where my couples feel completely safe, celebrated, and free to be themselves.
As a queer woman myself, I understand that feeling of wanting to know you'll be welcomed, understood, and celebrated exactly as you are. During our first phone call, we talked about creating a wedding experience where they could simply be themselves without worrying about anything else.
That's exactly how I approach every wedding.
Long before the wedding day arrives, I'm helping my couples build timelines, choose the best locations, and think through the flow of the day so everything feels effortless once it begins. For Eva and Dani, that meant planning their first looks at the lake house, keeping portraits on schedule, and making family photos feel organized instead of stressful. My goal is always to create enough structure that my couples can relax and be fully present with one another.

Frye Island Wedding | Eva & Dani

A Surprise Fort Allen Park Proposal in Portland, Maine

As a Fort Allen Park proposal photographer, I know that the best proposals are about so much more than the moment someone gets down on one knee. They're about creating an experience where you can be completely present with the person you love, knowing someone else is taking care of every detail behind the scenes. Colin's surprise proposal to Robyn at Fort Allen Park was the perfect example of that.
Their proposal was emotional, filled with happy tears, and thoughtfully planned from start to finish. Knowing how meaningful this location was to their relationship made documenting it even more special.

Planning the Perfect Fort Allen Park Proposal

When Colin first reached out to me, he knew exactly where he wanted to propose. It had to happen on a park bench along the Eastern Promenade in Fort Allen Park because that was where he and Robyn had fallen in love during a weekend trip to Portland.
Since keeping everything a complete surprise was so important, we intentionally kept communication simple. Instead of sending a lot of written directions, I created a video showing Colin exactly where I would be waiting so he wouldn't have to search for me when they arrived. I also shared my location with him on the day of the proposal so he could feel confident that everything was in place.
One of the biggest things I do for my proposal clients is remove as much stress as possible. The person proposing has enough on their mind. My job is to make sure logistics disappear into the background so they can focus entirely on their partner.

A Proposal Filled with Happy Tears

When the day arrived, I settled onto a nearby park bench with a book and my camera resting beside me, blending into the scenery while I waited for Colin and Robyn to arrive.
As soon as Colin turned toward Robyn and dropped to one knee, I quietly stood up and began photographing the moment from a distance. Robyn was so wrapped up in the emotions of everything happening that she never even noticed me. That allowed me to capture every smile, every tear, and every reaction as naturally as it unfolded.
Once the excitement settled, she finally spotted me and gave me a wave. I introduced myself, and we began wandering through the park for portraits.

One More Surprise Along the Eastern Promenade

Our first stop was the rental property across the street from the proposal location. It was the home where Colin and Robyn had stayed during the trip when they realized they had fallen in love. Being able to photograph them there felt like closing one chapter while beginning another.
As we walked back toward the proposal spot, Robyn suddenly noticed a group of familiar faces waiting for her.
Her entire family was there.
Her mom and siblings. Colin's parents and sister. Everyone had been keeping the surprise a secret for months, and the moment she realized they were all standing there waiting to celebrate with them, she was overwhelmed with emotion.
I hurried ahead so I could photograph Colin and Robyn walking toward their families. Those candid moments, full of hugs, tears, and laughter, are some of my favorite images from the entire day.
After spending time together, we photographed family portraits along the Eastern Promenade before everyone headed off to celebrate over dinner. Colin and Robyn stayed behind for a few more portraits together, giving them a chance to slow down and soak in everything that had just happened.

Why I Love Photographing Surprise Proposals

It was one of those perfect summer afternoons in Portland. The sunshine was warm without being overwhelming, sailboats drifted across Casco Bay, and the ocean created a peaceful backdrop for such a meaningful moment. Robyn especially loved seeing the boats in the harbor, making the setting feel even more personal.
Experiences like this remind me why I love photographing proposals so much.
My couples know I care deeply about protecting the surprise and creating an experience that feels effortless. Whether it's scouting locations, creating custom planning videos, coordinating with family members, or building backup plans in case something changes, I want the person proposing to feel completely supported from beginning to end.
More than anything, I want my couples to know that I genuinely care about them. I care about their relationship, their future together, and the memories they're creating. I don't do this simply because photography is my job. I do it because I love being part of moments that enrich people's lives, and it's an honor every single time someone trusts me with one of the happiest days they'll ever experience.

Looking for a proposal photographer for your Portland proposal?

If you're planning a Fort Allen Park proposal or another surprise proposal anywhere along the Maine coast, I'd love to help you create an experience that's thoughtful, stress-free, and completely true to your relationship. I'll handle the planning and logistics so you can stay focused on the only thing that matters: asking the biggest question of your life.
You can learn more about my services on my packages page, and when you're ready to start planning, reach out through my contact form below. I'd love to help you create a proposal you'll both remember forever.

A Private Perkins Cove Proposal in Ogunquit, Maine

As a Perkins Cove proposal photographer, I get to witness some of the most meaningful moments in my clients' lives. Erica's surprise proposal to Anna was one of those days I'll carry with me for a long time. Not just because of the beautiful ocean views or the thoughtful planning, but because I had the privilege of documenting such an intimate moment between two women whose love for one another was impossible to miss.
I share so many life experiences with my clients simply by being a queer woman. Validating their relationship and their love gives me so much joy, and I never take for granted the trust my couples place in me during such personal moments.

Planning a Surprise Proposal at Perkins Cove

When Erica reached out about proposing to Anna, we started planning everything over Zoom. My goal is always to make sure the person proposing can stay focused on the moment while I handle the logistics behind the scenes.
Erica rented a beautiful beachfront home overlooking the water in Perkins Cove because she knew Anna would love the privacy and the incredible ocean backdrop. It was the perfect setting for a proposal that felt completely personal to them.
While Erica and I finalized the timeline, her family helped decorate the space with candles and meaningful details. As we waited for everything to come together, I loved hearing stories about Erica and Anna's relationship. You could tell how excited everyone was to celebrate them.

A Beautifully Intimate Proposal

Once everything was ready, the family quietly left the house while I waited inside the living room for Erica and Anna to arrive. Since Anna had never been to the rental before, her family simply told them where to walk, allowing the surprise to unfold naturally.
When Anna realized what was happening, her reaction was everything Erica had hoped for. She was completely surprised and overwhelmed with happiness.
After the proposal, they spent a few quiet moments together looking through photographs that their family had arranged around the room. It gave them a chance to slow down and soak everything in before we headed outside to celebrate.

Portraits Along the Coast of Perkins Cove

After they had a few moments to themselves, we wandered down to the private beach for their engagement portraits.
The weather couldn't have been more beautiful for an early summer evening. The sky was bright blue, the air was warm, and the ocean provided the kind of peaceful backdrop that makes Ogunquit so special.
This location meant even more because Erica's family vacations in Perkins Cove every year. Choosing a place that already held so many memories made the proposal feel even more meaningful.
What stood out to me most was how profound their connection was. They truly seemed like best friends, which is one of my favorite things to witness in so many queer relationships. There is something incredibly special about the closeness two women can share, and photographing that kind of love is something I never take for granted.

Why I Love Photographing Queer Proposals

My couples often tell me they feel comfortable around me during some of the most private moments of their lives, and that means everything to me.
Proposals are incredibly personal. You deserve to feel safe, celebrated, and completely yourself. I know many queer couples choose to work with me because they know I understand their experiences in a way that only another queer person can. That shared understanding creates trust, and trust allows people to be fully present with one another.
When you're planning your proposal, I want you to focus on the words you want to say to your partner. I'll worry about everything else.
From choosing the perfect location to creating backup plans if timing changes, I'm there to make sure everything runs smoothly. If nerves start creeping in, I'll be the calm person by your side reminding you that everything is going to work out exactly as it should.

Looking for a proposal photographer for your Ogunquit proposal?

If you're dreaming about planning a Perkins Cove proposal or another surprise proposal along the Maine coast, I'd love to help you create an experience that feels authentic to your relationship. I'll help you plan every detail so that when the moment finally arrives, all you have to do is be present with the person you love.

Jennifer was so wonderful to work with for our engagement photo session! She was so kind and communicative throughout the whole process. She made the whole experience feel easy, comfortable and most importantly - fun. 😊 Would absolutely recommend.

Anna & Erica

I cannot recommend Jennifer enough. Jennifer captured our engagement / proposal with perfection. The photos were amazing (even the discrete ones) and will be a lifetime treasure - but beyond that, she was an incredible partner in the event.

From the outset, Jennifer proactively helped with planning and offered support on how to make the day special. She took the time to get to know “us” personally. When we had a last minute change of schedule, she helped sort through it, offered options, and fully saved the day. Hope we can capture more moments down the line and would recommend to anyone. Thank you!

Caroline & Colby

I would give Jen more than 5 stars if I could!

Besides her undeniable skill to capture special moments, she is so personable and encouraging. I could fully relax and trust that Jen was going to be documenting a day of our lives that we will cherish forever through her photos.
She blended in so naturally with our family and made everyone feel comfortable. I cannot recommend her more!

Kendra & Ben

Our photos taken by Jennifer were STUNNING! So much better than we could have ever expected or even imagined! Her vision was so apparent and came through so effortlessly. We couldn’t have made a better choice if we went through a million photographers. Amazing work honestly! She was able to capture the light and love between us in a romantic yet daily light.
